Is your skincare routine making you sick?
Six years ago, my two oldest daughters were sturggling with horrible skinn irritations. They were toddlers and I was trying EVERYTHING I could to releive them and improve their symptoms. Nothing was working. I dug a little deeper into what was in the products and creams I was using on them and slowly started to swith them out with DIY recipes and Young Living oils. What happened was, not only was their skin clearing up, but they had less mood swings, slept better, and got sick a lot less often.
What we put on our skin matters. The ingedients found in common lotions, creams, and washes can be secretly wreaking havoc on our immune and hormonal systems.
Top things to know about skin in general:
- Diet matters! Note how your body responds to foods like sugar, dairy, processed foods, or foods with antibiotics.
- Your skin changes in response to hormones, like estrogen and testosterone.
- If you have oily-type skin, you may notice an increase in facial oil before and during your period. Acne outbreaks during the premenstrual and menstrual period are common
- Your skin is one of your body’s largest and most important organs. It forms a protective physical barrier, regulates your temperature, and provides a route for elimination for fluids like sweat and oils.
- There is not a “standard normal” state for your skin, as it will change as you age and pass through different phases. Your skin can also change with the outside climate, or with sickness or ailments.
Companies are smart with their marketing. They are aware that consumers are demanding cleaner and better products for themselves and their families. Enter a marketing tactic called “greenwashing.” What is it? Greenwashing is a marketing target designed to make you believe the product is “green” by using terms like “organic,” “cruelty free,” and “natural” when really only ONE of those ingredients has to be included for it to be called this…everything else can be toxic on the ingredient list. There is a published list of 2,000 acceptable ingredients that can be grouped under “fragrance” wording. The list includes problematic ingredients, including carcinogens. Go grab one of your daily skincare or beauty products and take a look on the back label for the ingredients….does it list fragrance? These harmful ingredients can be lurking under the blanket term of fragrance and be causing you to not be getting the results that you want. They can put what they want on the front of the label as long as they don’t lie on the back and disclose all the ingredients. So, terms like “organic,” “green,” “all-natural” can be misleading.
These chemical additives can mess with our immune and hormonal systems…..
For example, Estrogen is associated with increased collagen production, skin thickness, skin hydration, wound healing, and improved barrier function….
-
- If this is out of balance, your skin will show it.
- We are covered in hair, even on our face. So, when these hormone fluctuations cause excess oil production, along with clogged pores, it will lead to breakouts.
- Thyroid imbalance can cause very dry skin. Dry skin can also be affected by genetics, climate, Psoriasis, or other more severe sensitivities.
- Important especially if you suffer from any of these symptoms and diet is not the cause….maybe its the ingredients causing imbalance inside your body.
- Our skin is our largest organ and when we have breakouts, rashes, and even severely dry skin it can indicate we need to switch up our skincare routine.
Drink more water…..
- Drinking water can help our bodies do what they need to do when it comes to flushing toxins. This is expecially important when considering we cannot eliminate all the toxins around us from our lives….so, helping our bodies to do their jobs can help with those horrible breakouts and flakiness. Water also helps imporve skin tone and overall appearance.
- Where breakouts or trouble spots are occuring can indicate a deeper underlying issue. Our bodies are all connected in every way! Take a look at this graphic:
